READING, Pa. - The Berks County district attorney is investigating an officer-involved shooting in north Reading. It started with an early-morning call Thursday about a car robbery in the 200 block of South Fifth Street.
"When the officers responded, they observed three individuals, one of those individuals had what appeared to be like a car jack or a saw," said Berks County District Attorney John Adams.
Adams says the three men were trying to cut a catalytic converter off of a car. When Reading police officers arrived, the suspects jumped in a Honda Accord and sped off.
"The Reading police tried to stop this vehicle, they activated their sirens and lights, the vehicle would not stop and a pursuit took place," said Adams.
The chase ended on a dead-end road not far from the River Road exit off of Route 12.
"The car attempts to, in essence, almost run over the police," said Adams.
That's when an officer opened fire, hitting the driver, 25-year-old Tyvan Barnett from Allentown, in the leg. He was taken to Reading Hospital. One of the passengers, 18-year-old Ejau Collazo, who's also from Allentown, was arrested, but the third person got away.
"His identity at this point is unknown so we are asking anyone with information in regard to this incident to contact the Berks County Detective Unit," said Adams.
Adams is also urging people to check their cars. He says detectives found multiple catalytic converters in the trunk of the Honda.
"It is troubling, they are going underneath a car with a saw, cutting off that catalytic converter, they're pulling out the precious metals that are in that catalytic converter and taking those metals somewhere."
No officers were injured in the incident.
Anyone with more information about this incident is asked to contact Berks County detectives at 610-478-7171 or Crime Alert Berks County by either calling (877) 373-9913, downloading the ALERTBERKS app on your mobile device, or via text message using your mobile phone and typing ALERTBERKS along with your tip to 847411.
