NEWS RELEASE ORILLIA MUSEUM OF ART AND HISTORY ************************* Meg Leslie of Atherley Arts designed the my_ceramic_selfie project for the 2022 Mariposa Folk Festival Community Village in which over 150 self-portraits were created as tiles by enthusiastic festival goers.
These selfies will be permanently installed at the Orillia Museum of Art and History (OMAH). The installation of the ceramic selfies will take place on Friday, Sept. 2 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at the Orillia Museum of Art and History (30 Peter St. S.) during the final See You on the Patio event for 2022. Visitors can stop by and say hello to Meg and her team and watch the installation take place.
Meg had approached the OMAH programming team to find out if it would be possible to display the selfies in one of the galleries. OMAH’s arts programming co-ordinator, Tanya Cunnington, immediately thought that the selfies need to be on permanent display, in an accessible space. OMAH’s executive director, Ninette Gyorody, suggested the main entrance to the museum would be ideal, directly on the front facade of the staircase.
Collectively, it was agreed that this location would ensure that the selfies, created by members of the community, will always be on display for the community.
Can’t make it? Don’t worry; we’ll be sure to share the installation (preview, during, and post) with you on social media.
Also, the museum will be open late, until 8:30 p.m. There are four exhibitions to view.
And, if you haven’t had a chance to join us on our Historical Orillia: A Guided Walking Tour, this is the last one for 2022. This tour through downtown Orillia begins and ends at the museum. Orillia has a long history, and throughout much of that time Orillia was on the cutting edge, “the city ahead” (as the community was briefly billed). On this tour we discuss people, places and events that shaped our city in ways that still resound today. We visit such iconic Orillia locations as the Opera House, Central School, and Couchiching Beach Park. On this tour we share stories that can be enjoyed whether you’re a lifelong Orillia citizen, or you’re visiting “the Sunshine City” for the first time.
