PERRIS, CA — On Wednesday a total of 448 stolen catalytic converters were recovered and 15 citations were written for various offenses during an automotive business compliance check search, according to a report filed by Riverside County Sheriff's Department Sgt. David Marshall.

Multiple catalytic converter thefts in and around the city of Perris led authorities to search for unlawful activities at 19 different businesses, according to Marshall's report. Unlicensed activities include auto dismantling, auto repair, sales of vehicles, as well as the recycling/buying and illegal sales of catalytic converters.

The daylong operation was conducted by the Riverside County Vehicle Dismantler Industry Strike Team, composed of sheriff's deputies and inspectors from the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

Boxes of car parts and numerous catalytic converters were found and recovered during the search. Many were identified as stolen based on engraving vehicle identification numbers, a practice encouraged by law enforcement officers.

Catalytic Converters filter engine emissions to pare down pollutants discharged by cars and trucks. The devices, located on the underside of vehicles, can cost between $700 and $1700 to replace.

"Catalytic converter thefts are on the rise and remain a high priority of our agency," Marshall said. "We encourage vehicle owners to etch or engrave the vehicle license plate or VIN into your catalytic converter to help law enforcement recognize the part as stolen if it is recovered."
